I don't generally recommend gift cards as gifts simply because they aren't very personal. I know it is a very popular gift to give at Christmas though. If you decide to give a gift card make sure you try to pick one for a place you know your recipient will like and include a handwritten note or card with it. Or wrap it creatively to make it more fun, for example you could wrap it with something heavy in a large box, or wrap it in a small box, put that in a larger box and wrap that, and keep going until you run out of boxes.
Another way to personalize a gift card is to make it a part of an experience. For example:
Put a gift card to the movie rental store with microwave popcorn, soda, and theater candy.
A gift card to a store could be put in a reusable shopping bag with a small notepad and pen, calculator, and new coupon holder
A gift card for a coffee shop could include a magazine or book
These small and inexpensive additions make a lot of difference and can turn your gift from impersonal to thoughtful and fun.
